About Us

Balmland Trading PLC is a green enterprise based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, working at the intersection of natural products, sustainable agriculture, and climate-smart innovation. Through responsible sourcing, partnerships, and green initiatives, the company supports sustainable value chains while contributing to resilient livelihoods and environmental stewardship.

Natural Products

Balmland Trading PLC works with natural resins and plant-based products sourced from pastoralist landscapes in southern Ethiopia. Our portfolio includes high-quality frankincense, myrrh, and natural cosmetics derived from traditional knowledge and sustainably harvested resources.

Through responsible sourcing and direct partnerships with pastoralist communities, we support climate-resilient livelihoods while promoting the sustainable management of dryland ecosystems. Frankincense and myrrh production contributes to the protection of native Boswellia and Commiphora tree systems, which play an important role in biodiversity conservation and carbon storage in arid landscapes.

By connecting traditional products with modern markets, Balmland Trading PLC contributes to building transparent and sustainable value chains that benefit local communities while supporting nature-based economic opportunities

Our Mission

Forests Mean Business: Why Value Creation is the Key to Forest Protection

Across dryland landscapes in East Africa, incense forests stand as a powerful example of how nature and economy are deeply interconnected. These forests are not only ecological systems — they are productive assets that sustain livelihoods, support communities, and build resilience in some of the most climate-vulnerable regions.

Frankincense and myrrh, harvested from these forests, are unique among natural resources. They can be collected during dry seasons and drought periods, providing reliable income when other livelihood options are limited. This makes incense forests inherently climate-resilient and economically significant for pastoralist and rural communities.

But the long-term survival of these forests depends on one critical factor: value.

When forest resources generate fair and stable income, they become worth protecting. Communities invest time, knowledge, and care into maintaining the ecosystem because it directly supports their livelihoods. In this context, conservation is not imposed — it becomes a natural outcome of economic relevance.

Conversely, when resources are undervalued or poorly traded, the incentive to protect them weakens. Without fair pricing and responsible market structures, forests risk degradation, overuse, or neglect. The link between economic value and environmental stewardship becomes clear.

This is where sustainable business models play a decisive role.

By ensuring fair pricing, ethical sourcing, and transparent value chains, companies can transform forest resources into long-term economic engines. These models do more than generate profit — they align the interests of communities, markets, and ecosystems.

Incense forests illustrate a broader principle relevant to global sustainability:
the most effective way to protect natural resources is to make them valuable — and to ensure that value is shared fairly.

As the global economy shifts toward more sustainable and nature-based systems, forest products offer a compelling pathway. They provide renewable alternatives to carbon-intensive materials while creating opportunities for inclusive growth.

Forests, when managed responsibly and integrated into fair economic systems, are not a liability — they are an asset.

They mean business. And when they do, they are protected.
